Fictional Documentary

autobiographical performance methodology

The fictional documentary offers a critical and performative path to challenge notions of identity, memory and community as fixed,

re-defining them through embodied radical subjectivities.

The methodology is inherently associated with autobiographical narrative-making (and un-making).

Fictional documentation facilitates the re-imagination and re-structuration of aesthetic and historical aspects of ourselves and our surroundings,

beyond colonial hierarchies marked by the scarcity of humanity, commonality and poetic potential.

The methodology questions dominant veracity of representations of past histories, to ultimately challenge their effects on us today.

It is an interdisciplinary cartographic reference to position ourselves within wi(l)der geo-racial contexts.

The process is always collective and incomplete quest, nurturing empathetic communities of performance and activism.

<background> My autobiographic experience as Brazilian with a mixed ethnic background inspired the articulation of this methodology

I have much more information about my Portuguese ascendants and very little about those with an African background, showing the great asymmetry between the stories and narratives told across generations. Accordingly, there are unproportional amount of organizations, institutions and measures to preserve European and African ascendants' memory. Colonization still shows its wide symbolic effectiveness.
Therefore, fictional documentation aims to bridge the personal and macro aspects of this phenomena from decolonial perspectives.

Fictional documentation  arises as a response to such asymmetry, building platforms for radical-poetical encounters and communities

to document their unmentioned memories occupying public spaces of significance.
